The Siberian Husky: Dog of the North
The Chukchi tribe of the great northern expanses in Siberia was the nomadic tribe which bred the Siberian Husky dogs. The tribe was well known for their remarkable aptitude for breeding these fine dogs as early as 3000 years ago. They were a people who lived inland and hunted along the coastal shores and they used the dogs for pulling back the game, many times over very long distances. Their dogs were bred purely and selectively and consequently the Siberian Husky of today is very directly descended from the original dogs belonging to the Chukchi tribe. The dog was little known in the United States or in Europe until the first "Alaska Sweepstakes" (later known as the Iditarod) was run and a team...
The Dachshund is popularly called "The Wiener Dog" because of its long and low appearance. The Dachshund in Germany is known as the "Tekal" . The Word "Tekal" can be found inscribed on the base of an ancient Egyptian sculpture which pictures a King seated with three rather strange yet familiar dogs. Apparently a breed of dog that was long backed and short legged did exist in Egypt at a very early date. These dogs are said to be the forebears of the Dachshund as we know it today. The German word "dachshund" translates as badger dog, historically this was the work which the little dog performed. Badgers are nasty and vicious animals, living in burrows in the ground and the Dachshund is a breed...
Seasonal Activities in Vemont
One of the beautiful things about Vermont is the change of seasons. It keeps life interesting with a constant change of scenery ranging from the grey cloudy weather of November to the incredibly bright crisp blue and white of a clear winter day. We have warm summer days with high humidity and sub zero winter days with zero humidity and every thing in between. These temperature ranges tend to keep out a lot of the nuisance insects that our neighbors to the south have with rare sightings of ticks and lime disease, and virtually no poisonous snakes or spiders. Some of this has changed in recent years due to the increase in temperatures in the area. Tick sightings have becoming more frequent in southern...
Scout is a Border Collie we were given four years ago. He is a beautiful tri-colored dog that is full of energy. The first two years we had him he hardly stopped running. His family hated to give him up but they had moved from their home with two acres to a house with a very small yard. Scout was going crazy, and driving the neighbors crazy as well. He loves our large yard and can run the 100+ foot distance from one side to the other in two seconds flat. He is beautiful to watch as he seems to hardly touch the ground. Scout, like most Border Collies, gets along great with everyone and is never a problem with other dogs. He is also gentle with all the animals we have: cats, chickens, rabbit, guinea...

Use Newspaper Clippings, Graphics, Kid's Art,...
A popular addition to scrapbook pages is newspaper clippings. Newspaper clippings of birth announcements, team photographs, or favorite celebrities add a personal touch to scrapbook pages.Newspaper contains about 4% lignin. Therefore, yellowing and brittleness of the newspaper paper will eventually occur. However, since the percentage of lignin is low, newspaper will preserve for many years before this deterioration process begins to occur. To further slow this process, use Mylar or page protectors to protect the newspaper from the outside elements.Various graphics and clip art are available on the Internet. Many of these items can be downloaded or printed for free. Downloading and printing images...

The Dog of a Thousand Yawns a Day
I have this friend of mine who has been my best friend going on 2 years now. Anyhow, I've been noticing that he's constantly yawning all day long. Like he's really bored or he's just bored when he's around me.I should mention my friend, my best friend, is my dog Cuervo. He's a husky/wolf mix. An absolutely beautiful dog who'll be celebrating his 2nd birthday in mid-April. We've had him since he was a 6 week old puppy and he's been a blast as an addition to our family, my girlfriend Christine & myself. He's smart, obedient, playful, everything anyone would love in a big dog. But I've noticed lately that he yawns all the time. And I mean constantly. Whats up with that? He'll be moseying around the...

The domestication of dogs occurred between 12,000 and 25,000 years ago. Experts say that all dogs have evolved from the wolf. There are about 400 different breeds of dogs. Further North to Alaska
With the excitement of my first trip to Alaska still fresh and percolating in my mind, I can hardly keep from telling fishing friends and aquaintances of my ensuing trip.As you would well expect, it draws different and varied responses from those that I tell. Tom, a softball teammate and avid fisherman, and I were celebrating a post game loss (we celebrate win or lose!) at a local pizza parlor, when I mentioned to him that I was headed to Alaska.Tom is a veteran of several fishing trips to Alaska, and I was anxious to hear some of his accounts of past trips to the" land of many fish"."Where you headed to?" Tom asked politely."The upper Kenai." I replied."Oh. Yeah it's quite a zoo there." He said...
Why The Pomeranian Is A Fluff To Be Reckoned With
The Pomeranian is a small fluff ball that looks like a miniature lion. His double coat that can be colored orange, red, brown, cream, white, blue or black, and his small erect ears, are his most distinctive features. Although his coat is beautiful, it does shed plenty of fur and will require daily grooming to keep it free from mats and knots. Pomeranians first became popular in England in the late 19th century thanks to Queen Victoria who took a great liking to the breed. However, Poms were actually developed from sled dogs in the once Prussian region of Pomerania, where the breed received their name. The Pomeranian is full of energy and is incredibly clever. He loves to learn and work which makes...

Sleigh Bells
The first thought that comes to mind when you hear the words "sleigh bells" may be that of Santa's reindeer plowing through the snow with their bells ringing a magical tune. The joy of Christmas or the holidays may slowly creep in.As children, we have always been amused by the sound of tiny bells ringing. Even babies are intrigued by the sound. For those in the Arctic region, the sound often means the return of a family member from a hunting trip or the delivery of goods expected for weeks or months.Sleigh bells have adorned horses and other farm animals since the ancient times. Whether they were meant to add to the festive mood of victory parades or to keep the farmer aware of his animal?s...

With Great Reverence
One of the things I meant to do when I returned to Scotland four years ago was to look up an old Scottish friend that I'd last seen some twenty years ago in London. In truth I had a whole hatful of ambitions and intentions on my list, and rather to my own surprise and to the utter amazement of my wife and daughter, I've gradually managed to tick them off over the last few years. Alright, I know you can't wait to find out what was on this list, so I'll just run through some of them briefly. First of all, since I was no longer a full-time musician, having developed the guitarists version of tennis elbow, I needed something else to fill my time, and the only other thing I was good at (apart from...

How to Feed Your Dog Healthy Food
When my last dog Jack died from lymphoma, I got really angry. I found out that I had been feeding him poison by giving him cheap commercial dog food. I was even further disturbed to learn that the "protein" content in cheap commercial dog food is often made up of road kill and pound puppies!I determined from the day I brought Smash home that no matter what, as long as he lived with me, I would do my best to feed him only healthy food.I learned about what wild dogs eat and what balanced nutrition means to a dog. I have studied nutrition in humans for a long time and my mom writes so I had plenty of background to draw from in establishing a healthy diet for my dog.Because wild dogs eat the whole...

Every Time President Bush Travels the Democrats...
Have you noticed that every single time that the president of the United States leaves on a trip for diplomacy abroad or traveling the nation that the Democrats immediately cause the non-event controversy, thus cutting his visits short. This is indeed a travesty for all of America and all Americans, because part of the job of the president of the United States is to promote this great nation. In preventing our leader from promoting those things that are essential to peace both foreign and domestic and new concepts that could better our nation, we the people in the end are the real losers.
